Many people in computer science wonder why only a small fraction of college and university computer science students are female, even though women make up a growing portion of computer and Internet users. Maybe there are many reasons. We can make clear the reasons through analyzing the gender gap in computer science.

In the early 1980s, computer science had one of the highest proportions of female undergraduates in science and engineering, and the number of women receiving the bachelor’s degrees in the field had been increasing at an exponential rate from 1970 to 1985. 1985 was the peak year where women received about 38 percent of the field’s bachelor’s degrees in the United States. It had become one of the least gender-balanced fields in American society, especially in 2003, when the percentage of women receiving the bachelor’s degrees was only about 28 percent. On the other hand, the men’s figure in receiving bachelor’s degrees had gone up from approximately 63 to 72 percent. This figure shows that the gender gap in getting bachelor’s degrees in computer science is getting wider, and we can think that popularity of computer science as a career or a field has been decreasing for women.

On the other hand, in the case of master’s degrees, it is different from bachelor’s degrees. The gender gap in getting degrees is narrower than the bachelor’s degree. The noticeable thing is that the amount of women granted master’s degrees has been rising at a linear rate until now. More and more women are getting their master’s degrees in computer science.

In the case of doctorate degrees, the number of men who were granted doctorates rose exponentially from 1985 to 1995. But the women’s figure was completely different. Although the figure goes up and down, like the master’s degrees in computer science, the figure of women getting doctorates has increased steadily on the whole.

The gender gap in the undergraduate field is getting wider and wider. It seems that obstacles to women’s participation in the field of computer science seem to stem from something inherent in the field. Computer game is introduced to boys at a young age, while most girls are not interested in computer games. As children grow, the computer industry consists of male-targeted computer games. Eventually, most men pursue computer science because they are familiar with computers since they were a child, while most women don’t become interested in the field of computer science.

Clearly there will be a tendency toward male-dominance in the field. But the above graph shows that the gender gap in getting degrees in computer science is getting narrower with the pursuit of a more advanced degree. In this case, while computer science is not an attractive field for women before pursuing an undergraduate degree, if women participate in the field of computer science, the interest of computer science would grow, narrowing the gender gap in getting degrees in computer science.

But the above graph shows that the gender gap in getting degrees in computer science is getting narrower with the more advanced degree. It is that computer science is not attractive field for women before undergraduate, but if women take participation in the field of computer science, the interest of computer science would be growing. So the more women will be want to get higher degrees and the gender gap in getting degrees in computer science will be narrower than now.

네덜란드인의 튤립 투기

역사상 최초의 자본주의적 투기는 '네덜란드인의 튤립 투기'라고 한다. 16세기 중반 터키에서 전래된 튤립은 유럽인들 사에에 선풍적인 인기를 끌었으며, 17세기 초반에는 귀족과 부호들 사이에 희귀 튤립 변종을 소유하는 것이 유행돼 꽃 값이 솟구쳤다. 마침내 1630년대 초반 이 열기는 가격상승 기대심리가 작용하면서 투기적 광기로 변질됐다. 1624년 '황제튤립'은 당시 암스테르담 시내의 집 한 채 값과 맞먹는 1,200 플로린에 거래됐다. 서열이 매겨진 다양한 변종 튤립 가운데 칠더급 튤립은 1635년 1,615 플로린까지 치솟았다. 당시 네덜란드에서 네 마리 황소가 끄는 수레 값이 480 플로린이었고, 1천 파운드의 치즈가 120 플로린이었다. 튤립 값은 상승세를 멈추지 않아 1636년에는 희귀한 변종 튤립 한 뿌리를 사기 위해 4,600 플로린에다 두 마리의 회색 말과 마구가 완비된 마차 한 대를 더 얹어 주어야 했다.
1630년대 네덜란드의 경제적 상황은 투기적 안락감이 퍼질 수 있는 아주 좋은 조건이었다. 스페인으로부터 군사적 위협이 사라졌고, 네덜란드의 직물산업은 호황을 맞고 있었으며, 자카르타 지역을 차지한 동인도회사의 주가는 최고의 상승세를 타고 있었다. 당시 1인당 국민 소득이 가장 높았던 네덜란드인들은 앞 다투어 교외에 대저택을 짓는 등 호황을 만끽했고, 풍요와 오만에 젖은 네덜란드인들은 과시욕과 더 큰 부를 안겨 줄 대상을 찾았는데, 그것이 바로 튤립이었다.
튤립은 1635년 'Semper Augustus'라는 희귀종이 6,000 플로린에 매각됨에 따라 최고가를 기록했다. 튤립의 최고가 6,000 플로린은 당시 네덜란드 인의 평균 연간 수입 150 플로린의 40배로, 오늘날 우리나라에서 약 6억원의 수준이 된다.
마침내 1637년 2월 튤립 시장이 붕괴했다. 튤립 거래의 중심지였던 하를렘에는 부도가 줄지어 발생했다. 튤립 시장의 불안은 1년 뒤인 1638년 5월까지 지속됐다. 당시 네덜란드 정부는 매매가격의 3.5 퍼센트만을 지급하는 것으로 모든 채권, 채무를 정리하도록 명령하는 극단적인 조치를 취했다. 1,000 길더를 받기로 하고 튤립을 팔았던 사람은 35길더만을 받을 수 있었다.
오늘날 네덜란드가 튤립으로 유명한 것은 이미 400년 전부터 튤립 광풍이라고 할 만큼 다양한 색깔과 품종의 튤립이 개발됐기 때문이다. 그렇다면 왜 네덜란드에서만 튤립 버블이 생겨난 것일까? 계속된 전쟁으로 많은 귀족들이 죽은 네덜란드에서 부와 사회적인 지위의 상징이 됐으며, 상공업으로 부를 축적한 새로운 시민계급들이 서로 앞 다투어 더 귀하고 특이한 튤립을 소유하려고 애썼기 때문이다.

고리대금의 사슬을 끊어버린 방글라데시의 그라민은행

2006년 노벨평화상 공동 수상자는 방글라데시의 유누스 그라민은행 총재와 그라민은행이다. 스웨덴 한림원은 유누스 박사가 '마이크로 크레디트 제도'를 통해 개도국의 빈곤 퇴치를 위해 노력했으며, 가장 빈곤한 사람들에게 가장 필요한 것이 무엇인지 보여주었다고 평가했다. 유누스 박사는 빈민구제의 공을 인정받아 1984년 막사이사이상을, 2006년 서울평화상을 수상했다. 그리고 2004년에는 펜실베니아대 와튼 스쿨이 선정한 '가장 영향력 있는 25명의 경제인' 중 한 명으로 뽑혔다. 또한 유누스 박사는 미국의 월간 경제지 <비지니스 2.0>이 발표한 '지금 가장 중요한 50인' 중에서 30위에 올랐다.
1940년 방글라데시의 치타공에서 태어난 유누스 박사는 다카대를 졸업하고 미국 밴더빌트대에서 경제학 박사학위를 받고, 1972년 치타공대학 교수로 부임했다. 그는 대나무제품을 만들어 생계를 이어가는 고향 마을 주민들이 27달러가 없어 고리대금업자의 횡포에 시달리는 현실을 목격하면서 '무담보 소액대출 제도'를 생각하게 됐다. 자신의 돈을 빌려 주는 것에서 나아가 1976년에는 자신의 보증으로 국립은행에서 돈을 빌려 더 많은 빈민들을 구제했다. 중앙은행의 동참으로 유누스 박사는 1979년에 교수직을 버리고 이 사업에 전념해 1983년 그라민은행을 설립했다. 유누스 박사는 소득이 적고 신용이 낮아 은행으로부터 대출이 불가능한 사람들에게 담보 없이 저렴한 이자로 대출해 주어 고리대금의 굴레로부터 벗어나게 하는 성과뿐만 아니라 대출 회수율 98퍼센트라는 놀라운 성공을 거두었다.
방글라데시어로 '그라민'은 '마을'이란 의미로 거의 모든 업무가 돈을 대출해 간 마을의 채무자들의 모임인 '센터'에서 이루어진다. 그라민(마을) 은행에서 4~5명의 그룹 단위로 무담보 소액융자를 해주는데, 융자를 받은 사람들은 돗자리를 짜는 등의 일을 시작한다. 그렇게 해서 번 돈으로 융자금을 매주 꾸준히 갚아 나가게 된다. 따라서 '마이크로 크레디트'는 가난한 사람들에게 소액의 종자돈을 빌려줘 창업을 통해 자립할 수 있도록 돕는, 일종의 대안 금융제도이다.

한계효용의 개념도 고려될 수 있다.

상충관계, 기회비용과 함께 한계효용의 개념도 고려될 수 있다. 또한 한계효용의 개념을 원용하여 합리적인 사람은 한계적으로 생각한다라든가, 한계효용이 한계비용을 초과하는 경우에만 의사결정을 한다는 것으로 해석도 가능하다. 많은 수입을 올리는 타이거 우즈에게 1만 달러의 추가소득이 주는 한계효용은 매우 작겠지만 가족과 함께 하는 그 시간의 한계효용은 보다 클 수 있고, 이를 희생하는 것은 엄청난 비용이 될 수 있다. 만약 우즈가 1만 달러가 아닌 1억 달러라는 엄청난 광고비의 유혹을 뿌리치지 못해 가족과 함께하는 시간이 줄어들고 이것이 가정 파탄으로 이어진다면, 위자료나 변호사 비용으로 지출해야 할 금전적인 손실 또한 엄청나게 된다.

한계효용

소비자가 재화나 용역을 추가적으로 1단위 구매함으로써 얻는 추가적인 만족이나 편익을 나타내는 경제학적 개념.

이것은 거꾸로 추가적으로 구매한 상품 1단위가 소비자에게 주는 효용이나 편익은 그가 이미 소유하고 있는 상품량과 관계가 있음을 의미한다 (→ 색인 : 효용).

한계효용은 다음과 같은 예를 통해 설명될 수 있다. 7조각의 빵을 가지고 있는 가족에게 추가적으로 빵 1 조각이 제공된다면 빵 1조각의 한계효용은 클 것이다. 왜냐하면 다소 배가 고픈 상태였던 가족에게 7조각과 8조각의 차이는 상대적으로 의미가 있을 것이기 때문이다. 그러나 30조각을 가지고 있는 가족에게 추가적으로 빵 1조각이 제공된다고 했을 때 30조각과 31조각의 차이는 상대적으로 작을 것이며, 가족의 배고픔은 그들이 이미 소유하고 있는 빵에 의해 완화되었을 것이기 때문에 추가적으로 제공되는 빵 1조각은 보다 작은 한계효용을 갖게 될 것이다.

구글 리더로..

메일을 정리하고, 변경된 내용을 서브버전에 업데이트 시켰다. 그리고 나서 RSS 쪽도 손 볼 겸, 썬더버드의 설정을 찾아보니 RSS가 저장되는 곳이 설정이 전혀 안되어 있는 것이다. 찾아봐도 UI를 제공해주는 것은 없고, 설정 파일을 변경하는 방식으로 하는 것은 가능하다는 것을 알았다. 근데 이런 방식은 영 아닌 거 같아서 이번 기회에 RSS 리더를 따로 하나 장만해서 보는 게 좋을 것 같아서 찾아보기 시작했다.

이전에는 RSS 리더를 클라이언트 프로그램으로 따로 쓰는 경우가 많았지만 요즘에는 웹에서 제공해주는 RSS리더라던지 브라우저에 제공되는 플러그인을 많이 이용한다. 웹 쪽으로 가는 게 좋을 듯 해서 찾아보니 사람들이 많이 쓰는 것은 bloglines.com과 구글 리더였다. 이 둘을 테스트하면서 쓰기로 한 쪽은 구글 리더. 이미 구글 쪽 어플리케이션을 많이 사용하고 있어서인지 인터페이스도 적응하기 쉬웠고, 검색을 통해서 rss 피드를 쉽게 찾아주는 게 마음에 들었다.

이전에 쓰던 rss 피드를 찾아서 구글 리더에 추가를 해주고 한 눈에 보니 보기 참 편하였다. 다만 아쉬운 점이라면 웹 인터페이스의 한계라고나 할까 조금 느린 반응이 느껴진다. 그리고 구글 리더의 경우 단축키 기능을 제공하는 데 이 때 영문 입력일 때만 제대로 인식하고 한글 입력일 때는 같은 키를 눌러도 전혀 다른 키로 인식해서 제대로 동작하지 않는 점이 답답했다.

이제 구글 리더를 시작페이지로 지정해놓고 이용을 해봐야 할 듯하다. 네이버나 다음에 들어가서 뉴스를 보는 게 편하긴 하지만 너무 시간을 뺏기는 듯 하여, 꼭 내가 볼 것들만 구글 리더에 저장해두고 보는 것으로 시간관리를 해봐야 겠다.

우분투에서 sshd 접속 메세지 바꾸기

이런 메세지가 뜨는데 영 보기 싫었다. 그래서 찾아보니 /etc/motd /etc/motd.tail 라는 파일을 변경하니 바꿔지네. 그래서 다음과 같이 바꾸었다.

하지만 이는 저작권 위반이 될 수 있으니 /etc/banner를 고치고 /etc/ssh/sshd_config 에서 banner 부분을 enable 해주는 방식으로 고쳐주는 것이 좋을 수도 있을 듯 하다. 다만 혼자 쓰고 배포 안할 거면 괜찮을 거 같은데..흠

리눅스 데이터를 rsync를 통하여 윈도우로 백업하기

여기서 하고자 하는 것은, 리눅스에 중요한 데이터가 존재하게 되고, 이를 윈도우로 백업하는 것이다. 즉 리눅스가 rsync 서버가 되고, 윈도우 쪽이 rsync 클라이언트가 된다. 몇년 전만 해도, 윈도우에서는 rsync를 사용할 수 없었지만 지금은 여러가지 윈도우 용 rsync 버전이 존재하여 이를 이용하면 리눅스의 있는 데이터를 윈도우 쪽으로 동기화, 백업할 수 있으며, 윈도우에서 윈도우 쪽으로 옮기는 것도 역시 가능하다.

다음과 같은 과정을 통하여 작업을 진행한다.

1. 우분투에서 rsync 설정하기 를 보고 리눅스(서버)에 설정을 해둔다.

2. http://www.itefix.no/cwrsync 사이트에서 cwrsync를 다운받아 설치한다.

3. rsync.cmd 라는 파일을 윈도우(클라이언트)에 생성하여 다음과 같이 입력하여 준다.

@ECHO OFF
"C:\Program Files\cwRsync\bin\rsync.exe" -avz 서버주소::백업명 /cygdrive/옮길 디렉토리

cwrsync에서는 cygdrive/c/와 같은 형태로 c:\를 접근하므로 적절히 잘 변경하여 적어준다.

4. 그리고 rsync.cmd를 더블클릭하면 리눅스(서버)에서 데이터를 가지고 오게 되어 동기화를 맞추어 백업을 하게 된다.

참고.

위의 에서는 간단한 rsync 옵션만을 사용한 것이므로 ssh login을 이용한다던지 public key를 이용한다던지 방법도 충분히 사용가능하다. 그리고 리눅스의 캐릭터 인코딩이 윈도우와 틀린 경우에는 리눅스에서 정상적으로 보이는 한글이 윈도우에서 깨져서 나온다는 것을 유의해야 한다. 나의 경우에는 모두 영어로 데이터가 작성되어 있기 때문에 인코딩이 깨지는 것을 걱정할 필요가 없는데 만약 폴더나 파일 명이 한글로 되어 있으면 리눅스-> 윈도우로 동기화시키는 것은 다시 한번 고려해봐야할 필요가 있다. 이것을 어떻게 처리할 지 고민을 해봤지만 적절한 대책이 떠오르지 않는다. iconv를 적절히 이용하는 것도 가능할 수도 있을 듯 하고.. 누구 적절한 방법을 아시는 분은 댓글로 좀 알려주세요.

우분투에서 rsync 설정하기

1. apt-get install rsync 명령을 통해 rsync를 설치해준다.

2. apt-get install xinetd 명령을 통해 xinetd를 설치해준다.

3. /etc/xinetd/rsync 파일을 다음과 같이 추가한다.

    server          = /usr/bin/rsync

4. /etc/init.d/xinetd restart를 통해 재시작해준다.

5. /etc/rsyncd.conf 파일을 다음과 같이 추가한다.

use chroot = yes
read only = yes
host allow = 192.168.0.3
max connection = 1
timeout 300

각자의 내용에 맞게 수정한다. 

path : 공유할 디렉토리
comment : 설명
uid : 접근할 user id
gid : 접근할 group id
use chroot : chroot를 사용할지 여부, 특별한 이유가 없는 이상 꼭 사용할 것
read only : 읽기만 가능할 것인지, 백업의 피 대상이므로 yes로 설정
host allow : 접근 가능한 호스트 설정. 백업서버만 접근 가능하도록 설정
max connection : 최대 몇개의 커넥션을 연결할 수 있는지 설정
timeout : 타임아웃 시간 설정


6. 다음 명령을 통해 끌어온다.

rsync -avz 서버IP::Destination 백업받을위치

퍼미션 에러가 난다면 적절히 uid와 gid를 수정해서 백업대상 폴더의 권한을 획득할 수 있도록 해준다.

삼바(Samba) 설정하기

오랜만에 할려고 하니 기억이 잘 나지 않아서 블로그에 정리해두는 게 유용할 것 같아서 필요한 몇 가지만 적어두고자 한다.

1. samba 를 설치한다. apt-get install samba

2. 설정 파일은 다음의 위치의 /etc/samba/smb.conf 이다.

3. 삼바는 기본적으로 시스템 계정과 독립적인 계정을 사용하므로 따로 생성해줘야 한다. 추후에 [homes]를 이용하기 위해서는 시스템 계정과 같은 명의 삼바 계정 명을 생성해주는 것이 편하다.

sudo smbpasswd -a userid

4. [homes]를 이용하기 위해서 아래와 같이 smb.conf 파일을 다음과 같이 변경한다.

[homes]

comment = Home Directories

browseable = no

그리고 그 조금 밑에 다음부분이 있다.

readonly = no (no로 하면 쓰기가 가능하다)

5. /etc/init.d/samba restart 를 통해 새롭게 지정하면 끝

기타. [global] 부분에 hosts allow = 10.0.0.5를 추가해서 특정 IP만 접근 가능하도록 할 수도 있다.

이런 식으로 추가도 가능하다.

리눅스에서 sun jdk를 설치하고 사용하기

1. http://java.sun.com에서 jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin (linux self-extracting file) 을 받는다.

2. fakeroot로써 java-package 와 java-common 을 설치한다.
$ sudo apt-get install fakeroot java-package java-common

3. make- jpkg 로 bin 파일을 debian 패키지로 만든다.
$ fakeroot make-jpkg jdk-1_5_0_15-linux-i586.bin

4. 만들어진 패키지를 dpkg로 설치한다.
$ sudo dpkg -i sun-j2sdk1.5_1.5.0+update15_i386.deb

7. java 어플리케이션을 JVM으로 실행하기 위해 에디터를 이용하여 다음을 입력한 후 저장 /usr/lib/j2sdk1.5-sun
$ sudo vim /etc/jvm
